Maple World Beauty

Website:Maple World Beauty

We bought a deal with Outlet: $22 instead of $220, 90% off 90min Red Wine OR Aromatic Oil Body Massage with Whitening Back Scrub & Ginger Detoxifying Tummy Mask by Maple World. Conveniently Located at Orchard & Ang Mo Kio.

Our Ratings:

Location Convenience: ★★☆☆☆
Ambiance: ★☆☆☆☆
Cleanliness: ★★☆☆☆
Service: ★★☆☆☆
Return Possibility: ★☆☆☆☆

Our Experience:
Location - AMK Branch
The outlet is found at the void deck of Blk 446. Hence, convenience depends on where you are coming from. It is definitely convenient for those staying at the neighbourhood but not so staying anywhere else. We took a bus from the MRT station to the the blocks nearby and walked about 5 minutes to the outlet.

Only one of us went for the deal and was given a couple room only to be shared with another customer who was already half way through the massage. *GASP* Whatever happened to privacy?! The other customer had a curtained surrounding her, leaving another bed and leftover walk way in the room for us.

The room was overwhelmed with the smell of medicated oil (those that people used to massage on sprained ankles). And some of us felt overwhelmed was too kind a word used to describe the room when we were almost suffocated.

The scrub used was very fine and gentle on the skin. The lady did a great job being thorough with the back and even the arms. The scrub was cleaned off after that using wet towel.

We opted for Red Wine massage. The masseur had offered to let us verify that red wine was indeed used for the massage. We bet you are as curious as we are. How to massage with red wine??? Well, the shop has an "ingenious" way of mixing red wine to massage oil. TA-DA! We were, of course, disappointed. The sequence of massage was a little different from convention. The masseur started from the shoulders, back, arms and legs then turned around.

Next was the tummy mask. There's nothing unusual about it. No smell, no warm fuzzy feel.

And the massage continued on the tummy, legs, shoulders, face and hair. Note, we did not mention about cleaning our feet. And yes, we felt the same way...YEW...

After the service, we were sold the package. We rejected giving the reason of having to share room. The salesperson then told us to get only 2-3 sessions at $39.90 each and we can request for individual room during our next visits. However, she added, if we were to get more sessions such as 10 sessions, she would not be able to guarantee that we need not share a room with another stranger. HUH? And you are darn right, we walked out of the store without paying for any future service.

We bought a deal with Big Deal: 93% Off Balinese Body Massage + Biodetox Foot Spa

Our Ratings:

Location Convenience: ★★☆☆☆
Ambiance: ★★★☆☆
Cleanliness: ★★★★☆
Service: ★★★☆☆
Return Possibility: ★★★★☆

Our Experience:
The shop is a distance from Tanjong Pagar MRT. Not exactly convenient especially on rainy days. The shop owner seems to have a thing with purple as the walls outside the shop are distinctly painted in purple. Needless to say, the interior of the shop was filled with purple floral design.

We booked the couple room and was delighted to see one that is spacious accompanied with a jacuzzi (which we didn't get to utilize unfortunately). The photograph below is extracted from the website. It is a little deceiving as the actual room is a lot dimmer and definitely not as new.

The supervisor or the lady boss (we can't quite figure out her role) was warm and nice.

The Balinese massage was usual, nothing spectacular to rave about but the Bio-detox foot spa was a lot more interesting.

Our feet were soaked in ankle high warm water with a machine placed inside the water. Within seconds, we saw a cloud of brown oozed out from the machine, followed by some bubbles and stuff of other colours. We were told not to move our feet as the toxins were excrete out.

Amazed? We were, extremely. For 30 minutes, we stared into the pail of water, watching brown, green liquid oozed out and bubbles appearing in the water. And no, the bubbles did not burst!

At the end of the 30 minutes, the owner came to explain to us what it all means. Apparently, the machine attract the negative ions from our body into the water. The various colours and things in the water signifies different problems we experienced in our body.

For e.g.
1. green means that you have too much "metal" in your body aka you stared at the computer screen for too long
2. red / brown means your blood circulation isn't good
3. bubbles means there are too much guess in your body

GASP!! And yes, we thought we were doomed! And yes, we signed on a small package of 15 sessions to "cleanse" our body.

In conclusion, we enjoyed the warm service, the cozy and casual environment. What we didn't like was the rattling of the boss who couldn't stop sharing about how he survived through a bus accident.

So....we will just avoid the boss and enjoy the "cleansing process"...

Aura Day Spa

We bought a deal with Groupon: $18 for 60 min Food Reflexology at Aura Day Spa At Somerset (Worth $80)

Our Ratings:

Location Convenience: ★★★☆☆
Ambiance: ★★★☆☆
Cleanliness: ★★★★☆
Service: ★☆☆☆☆
Return Possibility: ★☆☆☆☆

Our Experience:
The shop is tucked among the row of restaurants along the Cuppage Terrace. One has to pay attention to the signboards in order not to miss the shop.

Appointment was hard to make. In the end, we made used of our half day leaves and went for it at 11am, the first timeslot. The day before the appointment day, we received a reminder call to arrive 10 minutes earlier so we could fill up our particulars.

We reached at 10.20am. The spa was open but the masseurs were not in. We were politely asked if we would like to go for our breakfast before returning but we chose to wait there. Afterall, aren't we usually advised not to have our body massaged within 30min after meals?

We were ushered into a tiny, dark corner to wait for our turns. The place is perhaps, the only place that doesn't fit into the nice setup of the spa place. Well, at least, they provided a cushion bench.

10.50am. We were still waiting for our session along side with other customers. Weren't we supposed to come 10minutes before time?

11am.   A consultant came to pass us the registration forms. We completed and continued waiting.

11.10am. We were brought to a room individually with a consultant. One of us suffered from eczema. Upon knowing about it, the consultant advised us from continuing with the massage! HuH?

Us, "But my groupon is ending this month!"
Consultant, "Let me check. But I think you cannot do massage."

She left and was heard having an argument with the reflexologist.

Reflexologist,"Eczema is a skin condition. It is NOT a disease! It will not spread!"

Consultant returned and said, "Why don't you come back when your skin has recovered?"
Us, "It is a chronic problem. I have gone for massage before and there is no problem with it. It will not aggravate. And it will not fully recover."
Consultant,"Ermm, how about when it gets better?"
Us, "So what am I going to do with my groupon?"
Consultant, "If you really want then I cannot guarantee you that it will not affect your skin."
Us, "It's ok. I don't need your guarantee"

Bad start.

We started with a foot bath followed by the reflexology. The reflexology was good but one of the reflexologist couldn't stop bragging about his skills. It's good entertainment except that we had expected some peace and quiet.

As expected, we were brought to another consultation room to be introduced to the packages. And of course, we did not sign any.

Lateness is definitely not our thing.
So is poor customer services.

We bought a deal with Groupon: $18 for Barbie Doll lashes

Our Ratings:

Location Convenience: ★★☆☆☆
Ambiance: ★★★☆☆
Cleanliness: ★★★☆☆
Service: ★☆☆☆☆
Return Possibility: ☆☆☆☆☆ = NEVER!

Our Experience:
We had a hard time locating the shop. From the map, it looks pretty near to Chinatown. However, it is nearer to Tanjong Pagar MRT station.

Velvety Beauty's receptionist was of no help either. We called a few times when we lost our way. Instead of directing us, she insisted that we take train to Tanjong Pagar. It didn't help that they called us several times to inform us that they were due to knock off after us.

Finally, we reached the place, around 15 minutes late. We were hurried into the room, told to lie down immediately so the therapist could do her job and knocked off after that.

The process was painful. This wasn't our first time curling our eyelashes. However, it was the only time that hurts so badly. At the end of the session, the therapist told us to add on $5 to apply a special serum which will help the perm to stay longer. We agreed.

After which, we were hurried out of the room. We were NOT even allowed a few seconds to check out the outcome. We were then hurried into the consultation room with dim orange light. Finally, we get to see the end product. The eyelids still hurt but the orange light was so strategically dimmed that we couldn't see what's wrong with the lid. We were then persuaded to sign on a package with them. When failed, they turned to sell us a small bottle of eyelash essence which cost $10. And yes, that was the very "serum" which the therapist sold us for $5 per application! *GASPED* We felt cheated! And of course, we didn't purchase anything from them. Thus, as you would have expected, we were chased out of the place in no time!

So what happened to the eyelids?
To our horror, both lids were swollen! The lashes were beautifully curled on 2 puffy lids!

Perhaps the therapist wasn't skillful enough in the application;
Perhaps the therapist was in a hurry to go home;
Perhaps the chemical was too strong for the skin

So what did we do?
We searched online and found only a FB page of the place. There was no email address nor contact details except for the main hotline. But we did find the own - Michelle Loke
We were nice enough not to post on Velvety Beauty FB wall. We messaged Michelle Loke privately about the whole experience and of course the swollen eyelids.
And NO, we did not receive any reply from her.

We will never return there neither do not recommend anyone there!
